Microneedling
Microneedling is a treatment that uses an advanced needling device to create punctures in the skin, also known as micro-wounds, microchannels, or micro-injuries. The body responds to these wounds with an immune reaction that cleanses the skin from the inside out, promotes increased cellular turnover to replace damaged skin cells with younger cells, and increases collagen and elastin production.
Collagen and elastin are two essential proteins for healthy and youthful skin. Collagen increases skin volume, while elastin promotes skin elasticity. At Franklin Skin and Laser, we use the Rejuvapen NXT® device during our microneedling treatments. This FDA-approved device delivers a safe and effective treatment that is completely customizable.
Adjusting Needle Depths
This device delivers a versatile, customizable treatment, and we can adjust the needle depths from .02 to 2.5 mm. Shorter needles target more shallow skin depths and can stimulate collagen production in more sensitive areas of the face, like the under-eye area and around the mouth. Shallow-depth needles are also an effective option for those who want to treat more superficial skin concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, and shallow scars and promote general skin health.
Our Signature Deeper Microneedling Treatment
At Franklin Skin and Laser, we offer a signature deeper microneedling treatment that uses deeper needle depths to meet the needs of specific patients. Deeper needles, also known as medical depth needles, can target more advanced skin concerns like deep lines and wrinkles and deeper textural imperfections, including acne scars, general scars, surgical scars, and cellulite. Patients who need more aggressive collagen-building techniques to reach their skin goals will also benefit from deeper needling treatments.
Using Your Growth Factors To Enhance Your Results
These treatments initiate a bleeding response, and that blood contains a combination of rich nutrients, including zinc, copper, and magnesium, as well as vitamins, enzymes, and nanoparticle technology. The blood then mixes with our peptide serum and transforms into a gel-like solution containing peptides and growth factors.
What To Expect
As this topical serum dries, it hardens like a topical skin care mask that we call a “blood mask.” The benefit of this treatment is that by initiating a bleeding response, we can circumvent the PRP or PFS process since your blood contains those growth factors and, during treatment, will automatically mix with our topical serums to promote treatment results.
Patients will leave the “blood mask” on their faces for at least six to eight hours post-treatment. We prefer that patients, if possible, leave the mask on for a full 24 hours so their skin can absorb all the benefits of the platelets found in the blood. That way, they can take full advantage of the skin’s increased absorption rate due to the open microchannels.
Enhancing the Treatment Results
The micro-injuries created by the Rejuvapen NXT® device cause the body to respond with increased collagen and elastin production and increase the skin’s absorption rate. The microchannels will create a pathway between the two layers during and after the treatment. For that reason, it’s important to capitalize on the increased absorption rate with an anti-aging topical solution that can absorb into the deeper layers of the skin and promote optimal treatment results.
During our treatments, we infuse a proprietary serum containing hyaluronic acid, also known as HA, peptides, and growth factors deep into the skin. For patients with melasma or pigmentary concerns, we can microneedle some topical brightening agents into the skin during treatment to lighten discoloration.

Is It Painful?
Before our treatments, we will apply a topical numbing solution to your skin. It can take up to 30 minutes for your skin to become numb, and once it does, we can begin the treatment using the Rejuvapen NXT® to target your areas of concern. You won’t have to worry about pain, but you may feel a warming sensation and light pressure during the treatment.
When Will I See the Results?
Some patients may see results after initial treatment, but the best results are most visible within 12 weeks of your treatment. We typically recommend that patients schedule a series of treatments, so depending on your ultimate treatment goals, you may need three or more sessions for the best results. Once you complete your treatment plan, your body will produce more collagen and elastin, and you’ll see gradual improvements in your skin.
Is There Downtime?
After your treatment, your skin will be more sensitive and appear red for the first 24 hours. We will give you aftercare instructions that include a detailed list of what products to avoid, which to use, when to wash your face, and how soon you can wear makeup after your treatment to ensure optimal results.
You’ll be able to resume your normal daily activities as long as you care for your skin as it heals from the treatment. You must also avoid sun exposure to protect the skin and avoid sun damage.
