Mole Removal: The Healing Process Explained

Mole Removal

There are many reasons you might decide to have a mole removed. Moles can be an attractive beauty feature if they appear in the right place, but they can also be aesthetically unpleasing. While they are common and usually harmless, when moles appear in adulthood, they may present health concerns.

At Franklin Skin and Laser in Franklin, TN, we offer our clients several methods of mole removal treatment. The healing process from mole removal is typically gentle but varies according to the size and placement of the mole as well as the type of procedure that’s used.

What is a Mole and Is Mole Removal Treatment Necessary?

Moles can appear in children, young adults, and older adults. They can be the same color as your natural skin tone or vary in shades of brown, black, or pink. It is typical for people with fairer skin to have lighter moles and for those with darker complexions to have darker moles.

Any part of the body can have a mole, and most people have at least one mole. In fact, adults have 10 to 40 moles, on average.

If you’re unhappy with the placement of a mole, anytime is the right time to schedule a consultation for removal. You might not like the way a mole looks, or you may experience irritation from clothing rubbing against the growth.

It is definitely time to schedule a check-up if you have a history of skin cancer or you notice any of the following features about your mole:

  • It is asymmetrical
  • It has irregular borders
  • The color is not uniform
  • It is bleeding or itchy
  • The diameter is larger than the eraser on a pencil
  • It is changing in size, color, or shape

A mole with any of these differences needs to be evaluated by a medical professional as soon as possible.

Mole Removal Options

We offer a variety of skin mole removal services to ensure you receive the best procedure for your individual needs. In all cases, the treatment area is numbed with local anesthesia for your comfort.

Laser Mole Removal

Laser mole removal is an option if your mole is non-cancerous. Laser removal uses the focused heat of a laser to kill the mole cells while leaving the skin around the growth unharmed.

Liquid Nitrogen

This procedure is also referred to as “freezing.” It involves the use of a small amount of liquid nitrogen placed directly on the mole. The freezing method is recommended only for non-cancerous moles.

Punch Biopsy

Punch biopsy is a type of excision that uses a circular-shaped scalpel for mole removal. The incision is then closed with one or two stitches.

Excision

Excision is sometimes the best method to remove a mole that is deep into the skin. Normally, it is only used if a biopsy has shown the mole to be cancerous. Excision requires stitches to repair the skin after the mole is removed.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Surgical excision is one of the most commonly used techniques for skin mole removal. A surgical excision is slightly more involved than simple excision. Depending on the growth, it may be necessary to remove some of the healthy skin around the mole to ensure all atypical cells are gone. Cauterization may be needed before the area is stitched.

Healing from Your Mole Removal Procedure

Many people are worried about having a mole removal scar, especially if the mole is on the face or in another location that can’t be covered easily. With skilled removal techniques and proper aftercare, scarring is minimal. In many cases, there is no trace of a mole removal scar at all.

Post-Removal

A mole removal procedure is a quick outpatient service that does not require hospitalization. No sedation is needed, so you can drive yourself to your appointment and back to work or home immediately afterward.

Recovery Time

Depending on the size of the mole, the type of removal procedure that was used, and your general health, recovery may take two to three weeks. During this recovery time, you can participate in normal daily activities. Vigorous exercise may be discouraged, depending on where the mole was located.

Mole Removal Aftercare

The mole removal site is a wound that must be kept clean and covered. We will provide full aftercare instructions for daily dressing changes. After the wound has healed, it is important to protect the area with sunscreen any time you are outside.

Will the Mole Return?

It is rare but possible for a mole to recur. If you have undergone a mole removal procedure and the growth comes back after healing, contact our office as soon as possible.

Why Can’t You Remove a Mole Yourself?

There are products on the market that claim to remove moles. It is dangerous to attempt mole removal yourself for several reasons, including:

  • The growth could be cancerous
  • Increased risk for infection
  • Increased risk of developing a serious scar
  • It is unlikely you will remove the entire mole
  • Topical products can change the look of skin cells

We are trained to perform mole removal safely while prioritizing your health. We run diagnostic tests and apply the skills needed to protect your appearance even with a “small” procedure like mole removal.
