All About Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal uses pulses of light to destroy the hair down to its base. That pulse of light specifically targets pigment in the hair follicle which is why we cannot treat blonde, white or grey shades of hair. The pulses create heat which damages the follicle until it is ultimately destroyed. Hair follicles are located just below the skin, and they are the ones responsible for producing new strands of hair. If the follicles are destroyed, then hair production is temporarily disabled. Laser hair removal is not a one size fits all treatment and patients cannot expect the same results across the board.
Is it permanent? We are asked this question 100 times a day and the short answer is no! What you will see is long term reduction because this treatment cannot be 100% guaranteed. We expect to see a major reduction in density (thickness/coarseness of the hair) as well as numbers of active hairs in the treatment area. In addition to timing, the treatment efficacy also depends on the area of the body being treated. Hair that is thicker, courser and higher in numbers has shown to be very responsive to laser whereas finer hair may grow back or not respond 100% to the treatments. Other factors that influence the removal process: energy levels used, expertise of the technician, hormones, life changes and underlying conditions of the skin. We are honest with our patients about their results and aim for a 95% reduction, as no laser treatment is 100% permanent.
Why Pay for More When you Don’t Need More?
What you should plan for: Laser hair removal is not a one-and-done deal. If you have stayed on the recommended clinical treatment schedule (once every 4 weeks for areas from the neck up and once every 6 weeks for areas from the neck down), you should see major reduction. Some patients may need more treatments outside of the initial package given that all hair color and texture is different. A lifetime of laser treatments is not necessary, may be unaffordable, and is not realistic when it is being performed correctly.
All About Growth Cycles
Let’s Talk about the growth cycles: There are 3 stages of growing hair.
Stage 1: Anagen-The visible phase. This is when you can physically see the hair above the skin and it is ready for removal. This is the most ideal time for treatment.
Stage 2: Catagen- the shedding phase. This is when the hair is leaving the follicles naturally from natural shedding or targeted reduction treatments. Laser hair removal is not ideal during this stage given that the laser energy will not reach the follicle. This period lasts about 48 hours.
Stage 3: Telogen- The resting phase. After the Catagen phase, the hair goes dormant. Laser hair reduction is not possible during this stage.
Unwanted hair needs to be targeted during the Anagen phase to have successful results. This phase typically lasts 2 weeks. Because individual hairs may be at different points in their cycle, it is key to have several laser sessions to ensure all the hair in the area has been treated effectively. In our 16 years’ experience, most patients need on average 6-12 treatments to entirely remove hair. If you need sessions outside of those treatments, we offer two years of free touch ups. At the end of your package and necessary touch ups, laser hair removal should last up to 6+ years. With the cases we have treated, maintenance sessions one to four times a year may be needed to keep the area hair free forever, as hair may have been in the Telogen or Catagen stage prior. Results should be permanent as long as there are no unusual changes in hormones or your medical state.
