What is Fractional CO2 Resurfacing?

Carbon Dioxide Fractional Laser Resurfacing, also known as Fractionated CO2 Laser, uses controlled energy to essentially vaporize damaged skin. Fractional lasers may combine the powers of ablative and non-ablative laser resurfacing treatments, meaning they target both the surface of the skin deeper layers. The CO2RE® from Candela is a versatile fractional CO2 system featuring a 10,600nm wavelength that provides precision when targeting and effectively treating the skin’s surface, middle, and deep dermal levels. This versatile laser offers a wide range of treatment intensities to treat everything from a dull complexion to advanced signs of aging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fractional technology allows the clinician to treat only a ‘fraction’ of the skin with the use of microscopic laser beams in which the pattern allows for space between the beams causing the damage purposely leaving some parts of tissue untouched. Leaving part of the tissue intact and allowing for some cushion of the skin around the damaged portion speeds up healing and allows for less downtime. Like most collagen remodeling treatments, the body’s response is encouragement of the production of new skin with many youthful characteristics. This includes the presence of more collagen and a more even toned complexion. Fractional CO2 is the next generation of CO2 treatment, delivering the same results without extreme discomfort and lengthy downtime.

There are no area restrictions for CO2 as long as the patient is a good candidate for the service. CO2RE is most often used on the face and around the eyes. Other popular areas are the neck, chest and hands. We have also treated cases of scarring and damage to the back, arms, abdomen and breasts.
Lasers may sound futuristic, but CO2 is one of the oldest, tried and true resurfacing treatments. A treatment from the CO2RE fractional laser is fast with minimal downtime compared to traditional CO2 lasers. The CO2RE simultaneously works on the surface and beneath your skin so you are receiving superficial benefits on the dermis and deeper tissue benefits in the epidermis. Because it treats a fraction of the skin at one time, it creates very precise, microscopic wounds. As the wounds heal, your body naturally produces collagen and new skin cells.
Ideal candidates for the CO2RE treatment have concerns about fine lines, deep set wrinkles, discoloration, rough, uneven texture, stubborn, acne scars, age spots, or skin damaged by exposure to the sun. It is ideal for anyone seeking younger-looking skin without the long downtime associated with conventional resurfacing procedures. It is important to meet with a provider to ensure that you are a good candidate for this treatment. CO2RE treatments may not be safe for those with certain health problems or those taking medications like Accutane, blood thinners or certain antibiotics. It is important to discuss your history of healing, scarring and bleeding disorders before committing to this procedure.

One of the key benefits of the CO2RE laser system is that the treatments are customizable based on each patient’s needs and requirements with regards to results and downtime. There are four different treatment modes (light, medium, deep, and fusion) and each of these offers a different result and downtime. The different modes can be combined in a single treatment session on different parts of the face.  Dr. B will help determine which mode is right for you and customize a treatment plan based on your concerns.

Light: Your true “laser peel”, superficial benefits, minimal downtime, great for younger patients with no major signs of aging.

Mid Mode: A combination treatment of a moderately aggressive laser followed by the light mode to stimulate new tissue into the epidermis and superficial dermis. Great for tone and texture.

Deep Mode: For deep set textural issues. Great for pitted acne scars, traumatic scars, surgical scars and deeper wrinkles.

Fusion Mode: A combination treatment of the mid mode and deep mode. It is the most aggressive mode. Treats tone, texture, scars and wrinkles in the same treatment.

Treatments with the CO2RE fractional laser are often well tolerated but we understand that clients have different thresholds for pain and that the use of lasers can make clients feel worried or anxious. We strive to provide an experience that is comfortable and safe. We have pain management options ranging from a compounded prescription topical numbing cream and in some cases, injectable anesthesia or a nerve block administered by our on-site physician. Some cases will require an additional level of pain relief which can be helped by administering oral medications for discomfort and/or anxiety before your treatment.
