Port Wine Stain

Port Wine Stain, Port Wine Stain

Port wine stain are birthmarks that develop due to malformed capillaries and veins. These dark-colored spots may cover a large surface area, and are typically located on the face and neck. Though there is no medical concern linked to port wine stains, the psychological effect of highly visible markings can be significant. At Franklin Skin and Laser, we help patients of all ages uncover healthy, clear skin with treatment tailored to their unique needs.

Dr. Bengelsdorf is very precise about the diagnosis and treatment of port-wine stain. The use of a pulsed dye laser has had a great deal of success in the treatment of port-wine stains. This laser absorbs the hemoglobin in the affected area in order to clear the skin. To achieve optimal fading of a port-wine stain a series of treatment sessions should be scheduled.

Laser treatment for port-wine stains is the best way to improve the tone of the skin. Research shows that this form of therapy can produce from 75 to 100 percent improvement when performed in a series as suggested by an experienced physician.

There are several reasons for treating port-wine stains as early as possible. In children, vascular birthmarks tend to be pink or red in color. With age, port wine stains become darker. This type of birthmark is also progressive in nature, meaning that it will expand and consume a larger area. In the adult, port wine stains typically become raised in a cobblestone pattern due to the formation of nodules or papules. The progressive dilation of blood vessels also increases the risk of bleeding and infection in the area of the birthmark.

Treatment options for port-wine stains exist and can help you look and feel better. For more information on treatment for port-wine stains, call Franklin Skin and Laser at (615) 595-8177.
