For years, Juvéderm was associated with the treatment of smile lines around the sides of the nose and mouth. Today Juvéderm represents a family of dermal fillers, which includes Voluma™ XC. Voluma™ is designed to lift the lines by your mouth. This benefit is secondary to its indicated use: to add volume to the cheeks.
What makes Voluma™ different?
Introduced in 2013, Juvéderm Voluma™ XC is the first dermal filler approved by the FDA to plump the middle part of the face. Like its sister products, Voluma™ is made from hyaluronic acid (HA).
HA is a biocompatible material. The body makes this molecule naturally. It adds moisture and softness to the skin. Dermatologists often favor HA-based products, because they are generally well-tolerated and pose lower risks than fillers made from synthetic or animal-derived sources.
Voluma™ is made through a unique process that uses Vycross™ technology, which produces a high concentration of HA. A particularly smooth gel results from this process. The filler may be applied seamlessly into the treatment area for the smoothest, most natural looking appearance. This specialized gel filler is designed to produce long lasting results.
What can I expect during Voluma™ treatment?
At other dermatological practices, a medical assistant or nurse practitioner would inject Voluma™ into the treatment area. At The Franklin Center for Skin & Laser, board-certified surgeon Dr. Steven Bengelsdorf is the only professional who will administer your treatment.
The doctor will use a small needle to inject the gel into the cheek area. Voluma™ contains a small amount of the local anesthetic lidocaine for added comfort. Dr. Bengelsdorf will inject the filler in small amounts and assure the gel is evenly distributed until the desired goal is achieved.
You can see the plumping and smoothing effects of Voluma™ immediately following the treatment session.
What can I expect following treatment?
A cold pack may be applied to minimize swelling and discomfort following the injections. The most common side effects reported following the initial treatment session included:
- Tenderness at the injection site
- Swelling
- Firm spots
- Bumps, irregular contours
- Bruises
These adverse effects typically subsided within weeks following treatment. The risks of unwanted side effects were generally greater among older patients who received larger amounts of Voluma™.
The doctor may suggest a touch-up treatment. In a clinical study, the company responsible for Voluma™, Allergan, reported 86 percent of subjects still had fuller cheeks 6 months after treatment. These plumping and smoothing effects remained two years after treatment among the majority of those studied. Maintenance injections will be needed to retain results over the longer term, but generally less filler is required during follow-up sessions.
