Franklin Skin and Laser offers Qwo®, the only prescription medicine used to treat cellulite in the buttocks of adult women. Women of all body sizes and skin types struggle with cellulite. Cellulite is caused by thinning skin, fat cells enlarging and pushing against the skin, and the fibrous bands under the skin thickening and causing tension.
Why are women more likely to have cellulite than men? While fibrous bands are found in both men and women, women’s bands are perpendicular to the skin, as opposed to criss-cross, like men’s bands. This allows fat to push out – ultimately creating the telltale dimpled look of cellulite.
What is Qwo®?
Qwo® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable for the treatment of moderate to severe cellulite in the buttocks of adult women. Together, there are three things that cause cellulite’s signature dimples: over time, skin thins, fat cells enlarge and push against the skin, and the fibrous bands under the skin’s surface thicken and cause tension
What could I expect from the treatment?
If we decide Qwo® may be right for you, here’s what you can typically expect:
- Visible results may be achieved in 10 weeks. Individual results will vary. In clinical trials, women received 3 injections, 21 days apart.
- Your Qwo® treatment(s) will be administered every 3 weeks for a total of 3 Qwo® treatments.
- Injections take just 10 minutes or less.
How does Qwo® work?
It is not understood fully how Qwo® works. The enzymes- called collagenases- are believed to target a structural cause under the skin. When injected it is thought to work in 3 ways.
- Releases the fibrous bands that are under the skin
- Allows the fat cells pushing against the skin to redistribute
- Stimulates the growth of new collagen
Is there downtime with the treatment?
There is minimal social downtime with Qwo®. Our patients most commonly reported bruising, tenderness and hardness in the injection site. Post treatment bruising is expected as 84% of women in the clinical studies reported injection site bruising. Bruising will differ from patient to patient as well as per treatment.
If you bruise easily, we recommend taking our physician formulated arnica 48 hours (about 2 days) prior to the treatment. If you experience any discomfort or tenderness, you may take Tylenol. Patients may resume daily activities immediately after the treatment. We recommend refraining from exercising the lower half of your body for a few days following your injections as the injection site may be sore.
What are the most common side effects?
- Injection site bruising
- Areas of hardness
- Warmth in the treatment area
How much cellulite is treatable?
A treatment area is defined as a single buttock receiving up to 12 injections. A treatment at Franklin Skin and Laser may consist of up to 2 treatment areas per visit.
How long is the treatment?
We will first begin with a consultation to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. Cellulite is often confused with laxity, so a proper assessment of the area is required. Consultations are about 30 minutes long and our physician or nurse will analyze the area, determine eligibility, discuss the treatment and any preparation/post care required.
The day of the procedure we will begin pre-treatment with clinical photos, marking out the treatment area (dimples), and take additional clinical photos with the mapped treatment area followed by the acual injections. Patients must lay flat for 5 minutes post injection.
Does Qwo® hurt? What does it feel like?
Our patients reported little to no pain during the injection. The injection itself can feel like a slight pinch or poke similar to Botox, Xeomin, Dysport or other neuromodulator injections. Once the medication is in the body, there may be a mild warming sensation.
When will I see results?
Visible results may be achieved as early as 4 weeks after your first treatment. Final results are seen 28 days after the third treatment, roughly 10 weeks from the first treatment. Multiple treatments allow for continued improvement as most patients require more than one treatment cycle of Qwo®.
How long will Qwo® last?
This injectable is brand new to market and was FDA approved in July 2020. It is changing how cellulite can be treated as there are currently no other non-surgical, minimally invasive options as effective as Qwo®. Unlike other injectables on the market, the results seen with Qwo® can last from one year, with the potential to last up to five years. Notably, each patient’s skin is different, and results may vary.
Please note that Qwo ® should not be used if you are allergic to any of its components or if you have an active infection in the treatment area.
How many treatments do I need?
Three treatments 21 days apart are recommended for best results. When it comes to treatments, if Qwo® is right for you, your provider will decide on a treatment plan, including the total number of treatments needed as you may need less than 3.
Am I a good candidate for this treatment?
